The Alliance Française de Sydney is delighted to welcome Sophie Biraud to give a series of 3 conferences  about the French National Museum of Modern Art Centre Pompidou.

After five years of studies in History of Art and Fine Arts in French and European universities, Sophie Biraud has been working for different galleries and Centre of Contemporary Art in France. In 2003, the National Museum of Modern Art - Centre Pompidou entrusts her with a mission for the documentation of its Contemporary Art's Collection, under the direction of Catherine Grenier, chef curator. She acquires a good knowledge of the whole collection, with a speciality on performance arts.

The Centre national d'art et de culture Georges Pompidou was the brainchild of President Georges Pompidou who wanted to create an original cultural institution in the heart of Paris completely focused on modern and contemporary creation, where the visual arts would rub shoulders with theatre, music, cinema, literature and the spoken word.

In a unique location under one roof, the Centre Pompidou houses one of the most important museums in the world, featuring the leading collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe, a vast public reference library with facilities for over 2,000 readers, general documentation on 20th century art, a cinema and performance halls, a music research institute, educational activity areas, bookshops, a restaurant and a café.

Unswerving in its interdisciplinary vocation and its core mission - to spread knowledge about all creative works from the 20th century and those heralding the new millennium, the Centre Pompidou presents, on the 5th floor, the masterpieces of the modern part of the collection, with artworks from 1905 to 1965, whilst the 4th floor shows contemporary artists from 1965 to nowadays. As the whole collection can not be displayed at the same time due to the huge number of artworks (54 000), the presentation is renewed every year.

If you are interested in Art and if you want to discover one of the most important and renowned institutions for Art and Culture in France and in the world, come to these 3 conferences given in English.
