Courses

Our communication-oriented approach provides students with opportunities to express themselves in French from their very first lessons.

Students may enrol in specialised courses in order to become proficient in French whilst at the same time focussing on a special interest, for example, phonetics or conversation. For students who require accredition of their level of French, we recommend preparation courses for universally recognised diplomas (DELF, DALF and TEF exams). For specific needs and the luxury of learning tailored to your needs, we propose a series of private or semi-private lessons. Students are also encouraged to discover our special courses which are linked to a particular theme (e.g. French regional cusine and French for Travellers).

Assessment test
Come to the Alliance Française de Sydney and revive your French language skills for 1/2 hour free of charge!

We suggest that each of our prospective students come to our premises, prior to enrolment, for a language assessment. This is conducted, in spoken and written French, to determine your current level of French and to discuss with you your objectives and your needs.

Please note:
  • only absolute beginners do not need to come for an assessment
  • assessments are by appointment

Below are some of the points we might discuss with you in order to help you select the course most suited to your requirements:

  • Why do you want to study French?
  • Is it for professional reasons, out of personal interest for the language, to prepare for your holidays, etc…?
  • What level of competence do you need to reach in French?
  • When will you need to reach that level?
  • Do you need to learn general or specialised French, ie legal French, business French etc…
  • When are you available for French language tuition? (days, times, how soon)

Online test

Before your enrolment, a written and an oral test will assess your level of French. This will allow us to place you in the most appropriate class. The written test, oral test and registration on our website are free of charge.*

If you are a complete beginner, we recommend our Level 1 Beginners courses or French for Travellers course as the most appropriate options to help you start your French learning. You are not required to sit a test to enrol in these classes.

The Oral Test

In order to give us a more accurate picture of your level of French, we need to test your oral expression and comprehension skills.

Should you wish to determine which of our classes would be most suitable for you please contact the Alliance Française by phone 9292 5700 or by email enquiries@afsydney.com.au after having finished your written test, to organise an appointment for an oral test. This oral test will last 20 minutes. It is free of charge. Your evaluation will be completed once your oral test has taken place.

*Be aware this test has been created for adults’ lessons. For classes for children and teenagers please contact us directly to discuss which class would be most suitable.
