The purpose of this class is to show the strong link between major French writers and the main cultural and esthetic streams of their time. We will not take literature as a mere example within a given period in art history, but rather examine how the style, the themes, the philosophy, the underlying statements of rich literary works are enlightened by the comparison with the spirit of its century: how a world vision can spread from architecture and music, painting and gardening, to writing. Our goal will be to encompass as much as possible the structural unity of each case through the diversity of arts and thoughts. Therefore, each course will be divided into two integrated parts: one dealing with an author of outstanding works, the other with the cultural vision of his time.
We will first study: CORNEILLE and the BAROQUE ERA
then MONTESQUIEU and the ENGLISH / FRENCH GARDENS
and then later this year: LACLOS and the NEO-CLASSICAL STYLE
then MAUPASSANT and XIXth CENTURY PARIS.
