TCF
Test de connaissance du français
The TCF is a French language proficiency test. It is a standardized and calibrated test that ranks candidates on one of six levels on a scale defined by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe).
TCF score results are reliable measurements for determining proficiency.
Developed by the CIEP, a public institution of the French Ministry of Education, the test ensures strict
methodology validated by a scientific committee composed of the best French and European
TCF assesses candidates’ level in French for general purposes. It is intended for people who are not native French speakers who, for professional, personal or academic reasons (requisite for continuing higher education in France), want to have their competency in French assessed and certified simply, reliably and quickly.
It is a multiple-choice test with 80 items that cover reading comprehension, grammatical structures
and listening comprehension.
It also includes optional tests for written and spoken expression.
All candidates receive a certificate of results that positions them at one of the six levels (from A1 to C2) of the competency scale defined by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

- a language structures examination (grammar and vocabulary)
2 optional tests:
- Written production (1h45mins)
- Speaking & oral interaction (15 mins)

Please, note that no enrolment will be accepted if it is received less than one month before the examination.
PREPARATION:
Remember that the TCF for Quebec only includes two examinations:
- listening comprehension (30 questions). Duration of examination: 30 minutes
- spoken expression (6 questions). Duration of examination: 15 minutes

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
- The TCF is valid for 2 years from the date of taking the test.
- You may take the TCF as many times as you wish as long as there is a gap of 60 days between examination sessions.
- No refund or deferment is possible.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Who is the test recognised by?
The TCF, created at the request of the French Ministry of Education by the CIEP, a public institution with responsibilities at international level, is recognised by the French Department for Higher Education, university authorities and university language centres in France and abroad as well as by the administrative authorities and the various institutions responsible for the teaching of French abroad.
The levels grid for interpreting marks, translated into 11 languages, allows users (in the world of education or work) to know exactly what a person who has taken the TCF is capable of doing.
Is it possible to register for just one of the optional examinations?
In order to take the optional examinations, you must have taken the compulsory test.You can take:
- the compulsory test only;
- the compulsory test and just one optional examination;
- the compulsory test and both optional examinations.
The optional examinations can be taken on different dates to the compulsory test, as long as they are taken within the validity period of the test.
When will I receive my results?
The results are sent to the test centre within 3 weeks of receipt of the examination papers by the CIEP.
Are all of the questions multiple choice questions?
In the compulsory examination, most of the questions are multiple choice questions. Some of them involve pairing up different types of information (matching exercises). In the "use of language structures" section, the structures are always connected with communicative situations and contexts going from familiar to abstract, depending on the level.
