Play our own music, have your own stage.

 

- Thursday 21st and Saturday 23rd June 2007 –
2 INTERNATIONAL DAYS DEVOTED TO MUSIC
where venues host musicians to share music with audiences

Musicfest is a free event which is an opportunity for musicians to play in unexpected venues such as Sydney Ferries, The Prince of Wales Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital, Parramatta Park, Cockatoo Island, the Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney University Museums, the Museum of Contemporary Art, etc.

Traditional musicians/bands representing Sydney’s different communities including Brazil, Africa, France… will add their unique sound to an evening of world musical harmony.

Susie Newman, along with her accompanist, the well-respected jazz pianist Peter Locke, will entertain and delight her audience with beautiful French songs of the past, including those of Edith Piaf, in the true cabaret style.
 
 


 
1.30pm MERIDEN ANGLICAN SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
Year 4 will sing and dance at the Alliance Française : ‘1, 2, 3’ from Sweet Generation
Year 5 will sing ‘Y'a qu'un cheveu sur la tête a Matthieu’, and a remix from the French TV Pop show ‘Star Academy’.
They will perform a short theatre sketch.

Jodi Martin is highly regarded in the Australian press for her string of exquisite albums and the reputation of her live shows. With her stunning voice, guitar and insightful folk/roots songs, Jodi has toured Australia, Canada, the UK and France, and will be recording her exciting new album in Quebec later this year.
Jodi is briefly back in Australia to play her first ever MusicFest, and has promised to feature a song in French in honour of the festival! Be there!

The Bloodwood Quartet members are all current students of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Formed in March 2006, the Bloodwood Quartet is affiliated with the Bloodwood winery in Orange, regional NSW. The ensemble frequently represents the University of Sydney and Sydney Conservatorium. From September - November 2006, the Bloodwood Quartet were cultural ambassadors travelling as the Sydney Conservatorium of Music String Quartet. Over three tours they visited Malaysia, Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The ensemble performs regularly in Sydney and Orange.

5.30pm GERVAIS KOFFI AND THE AFRICAN DIASPORA
Born in Bouarke in the Ivory Coast, Gervais Koffi grew up in the thriving, multicultural capital city of Abidjan, where his musical career kicked off in the late 1980s. Koffi arrived in Sydney in August 1998 to spread his infectious music and philosophies to the people of Australia. Since March 1999, Gervais Koffi and his African Diaspora have been performing at a range of notable venues They’ve also packed in the crowds at major festival across the country.
Koffi is a superb bass player and vocalist, a great performer and a magnificient dancer who breathes life into any audience.

8.00am – 8.20pm Miss V
Miss V has been compared to Go Betweens, Underground Lovers and Pavement. In fact, they've been compared to lots and lots of bands, largely because they have been known to squeeze up to 10 people onto stage. One plays piano accordion, another plays flute and a third plays triangle. The others just stand around looking shy. Released in 2004 and produced by John Kilbey, their debut album featured guest performances by Dave McCormack and Steve Kilbey.
 
9.00 – 9.20pm Gypsy Mammas
Newly formed Sydney, all women ensemble, Gypsy Mammas (PaPas are invited to participate as well sometimes), are making a scene with their Afro-Arabian beats and striking belly dancers. Providing an audio and visual feast, these ladies of MUSIC, rhythm and dance are set to warm you up and get you energized and ask form more.

Inspired by music of the World and different percussion instruments especially from Africa and South America, founder and composer Irina brings together a diverse range of performers ready to ignite the atmosphere with their dynamic melodies

Currently five members and growing, Gypsy Mammas are Irina, Esther, Sara, Jen and Luisa and they are taking on life, celebrating femininity through the power of music and dance.

ExcentricNewTango is a fusion of the band Urban Excentrics and musicians and dancers from NewTango dance studio in a blend of the modern and traditional.

Baghdad meets Brazil as Azadoota infuses Iraqi music with Latin percussion,
blending samba with bellydance and delivering a flamboyant, high-energy

Music today is often a formal event performed in venues and outdoor festivals. “Music in the Street”, comprising Australian and international photographers, is an exhibition celebrating the role of music in the fabric of our everyday lives from ceremonies, street buskers, neighbourhood festivals to demonstrations.

Emmanuel Angelicas
Emmanuel Angelicas was born in Sydney in 1963 where he studied visual communication and photography. Angelicas’ photographs are of his travels to foreign lands. His Marrickville portfolio - an ongoing documentation of his neighborhood began in the early eighties and is considered his signature work. Angelicas draws his subject matter from the same source that fed the social photography of the 1960’s, in which numerous distinguished photographers turned their attention to the study and exposure to the public of the various individual communities on the margin of society.
 
 
Gilbert Bel-Bachir
Gilbert Bel-Bachir was born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1959. He was educated in France, Israel, and Australia. He taught photography, in various institutions in Sydney, for a number of years. His work has been acquired by various institutions, and private collectors, in Australia, and Europe. He travelled extensively, to Micronesia, central Asia, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. Selected solo exhibitions in 2004: Images of Xingjiang at the Alliance Française de Sydney Gallery and M and M Auer Private Collection at the Musée d’Arts et d’Histoire in Geneva.

Marco Bok
Marco Bok was born in Echuca, Australia in 1961. He has a degree majoring in Sociology from the Australian National University and graduated from Sydney College of the Arts in 1989 with a BA in Visual Arts majoring in photo media. Since then he has worked as a professional photographer and photo media teacher. Marco is seldom without a camera and photographs anything that 'strikes' him in his daily life and has a vast collection of personal images documenting street life in inner city Sydney, Sydney city and Bondi Beach, his family, friends, and most recently his dogs.

Mark Dundas
Photography became a mainstay in my life after a backpacking holiday through Asia and Europe. When I returned in 2000 I did several courses at the A.C.P. in Paddington and developed a love for telling stories with pictures and an appreciation of a single image and its potential to influence the course of history. I have so far only exhibited work in Reportage and Cross Projections.

 
Stephen Dupont
Born in Sydney in 1967 to Danish parents, Stephen Dupont is a self-taught photographer whose passion is photographing people and areas that deal in global change and things that are disappearing from our world. Drawn toward places of conflict and with an eye for compassion, he likes to capture both moments of beauty and devastation in life. A true believer in the art of 'Real Documentary Photography' as depicted by the Robert Frank school of thought, Dupont is a consummate nomad with his camera.

Peter Elliston
Peter Elliston has photographs in various collections including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and various overseas institutions including the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and the UCR California Museum of Photography. He has exhibited regularly in one-person and group exhibitions and will shortly exhibit Volcano at Manly Art Gallery in Sydney, with a book to accompany the work.

Aris Georgiou
Aris Georgiou was born in Greece in 1951. Since 1977 he has exhibited his paintings and photographs at numerous group and one-man shows. Aris Georgiou has published his artistic work, articles and translations on photography, art and architecture in many Greek reviews and other publications. As a professional, his main occupation is his work as an architect, though he also has a major involmement in the graphic arts, mainly on projects of cultural interest.

Zbigniew Kosc
Zbigniew Kosc was born in Gdansk, Poland in 1950. He received the Ph.D. in social psychology at Warsaw University. After a short course in photography, he immediately gave up his academic career at the Free University of Amsterdam and in 1983 began studying photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. He is the author of Athos (1989) and his work has been reproduced in several other publications. His work is included in both public and private collections around the world, and his photographs has been exhibited widely and used commercially by Random House, Penguin, Warner Classic, HarperCollins and other international publishers. Since 1977 he lives in Amsterdam.


Roland Laboye
Roland Laboye was born in Castres, France in 1944. He lives, and works in Montpellier France. He is currently the artistic director of the Montpellier Photo-Visions for the exhibition programme of the city, and is the director of the Gallery Photo of Montpellier.
His personal work as a photographer on Humans in the City, has allowed him to achieve numerous exhibitions in, Lisbon, Pampelune, Alméria Andalusia, Buenos Aires, Athens, Rome, Thessaloniki Greece, and Jerusalem.
He is the Lauréat of la recherche photographique Prix Niepce, Gens d'images. Boursier du Ministère de la Culture, Bourse a la creation, Chevalier des arts et lettres.

Jon Lewis
Jon Lewis was born in Maryland, USA in 1950. He first exhibited in 1974. He was a member of Sydney's "Yellow House" in the early 70's, went on to make experimental video with "Bush Video", and started Greenpeace Australia, which led a successful campaign to end the slaughter of whales in that country. His interests are reflected in his photography, and when not on the hop, photographing or teaching, lives in the Southern Highlands of NSW, where he schemes for sponsorship, reads,
 
 
Glenn Lockitch
Glenn Lockitch was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1968. Glenn Lockitch has been independent human rights, environmental and social documentary photojournalist for the last 14 years. He has worked with numerous non government organisations and independently in Australia and overseas.
To stay independent in his work, Glenn drives a taxi to support his photojournalism and for 3 years has turned his passion for photography and story telling onto the passengers in his taxi. He won the Reportage 2005 People’s Choice Award for this series.

Lewis Morley
Lewis Morley was born in Hong Kong in 1925. After 4 years of being interned by the Japanese, he was repatriated to U.K. He studied in the UK and in France and began to publish articles about photography in 1957. In 1960, it was his first theatrical front of house photos... followed closely by on a hundred other productions. Lewis Morley emigrated to Australia in 1971 and worked in fashion photographer for Dolly, Interiors for Belle and numerous overseas assignments. In 1987, he sold his studio and retired from photography when he was informed that he had a solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. It was at this time that numerous one man shows, major solo exhibitions, retrospectives, various publications and books began.

Tess Peni
Tess Peni is a documentary and portrait photographer since 1991, her subjects range from the political to the mundane, and there was a stint as a celebrity social photographer where she learnt to work hard, late and fast.
Tess is a full-time mother now documenting life in the home with two children and the world through their perspective.

George Schwarz
George Schwarz born Zurich, Switzerland in 1935 educated in both French and German Switzerland migrated to Almunecar Southern Spain 1958 settled in Sydney Australia 1969 and has lectured and exhibited in this city ever since.
Taken on a worldwide motorcycle journey in the late Sixties, this series marks George's transition from painting to photography .The digitally restored images were exhibited at Stills Gallery in 2004 as "Highlights of the Road" and published in book from with travel text by Charis Schwarz.
 
 
Jenny Templin
Based in Sydney, Jenny Templin has worked as a freelance and commercial photographer since 1983. During that time she has conducted a broad range of photographic work for organisations such as the ABC and CITYRAIL and has been the official photographer for major events - including the visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in both 1992 and 2002, and has regularly exhibited her work in solo and group shows. Part of her passion also includes teaching photography for the last 15 years to thousands of adults at a range of tertiary institutions. In 2003 she was awarded ‘Tutor of the Year’ by Sydney Community College.
In addition to her work in Australia, she had spent years travelling the Indian subcontinent, exploring the diversity of her rich culture, history and spiritual traditions. In 2005 she journeyed with thousands of pilgrims to the source of the Ganges and has also been fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend time with some of India's leading mystics.

Vasilis Vasiliadis
Vasilis Vasiliadis was born in Thessaloniki in Greece. A self taught photographer, he moved to Sydney in1999, where he now lives. He is involved in collaborative photographic projects and has participated in both group and solo exhibitions.

 
Tony Wilmers
Tony Wilmers was born in Sydney in 1950. He took up photography in 1980. He completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Visual Arts (Photography) in 1991 at the College of Fine Arts UNSW. He has exhibited his work in a number of shows in Australia and overseas while his photographs have been published in several magazines and publications.
