| Novembre 2008
Chers amis,

November 2008
Dear friends,
Taking advantage of three cartoonists’ stopover at Sydney en route to Wellington, the Alliance Française welcomes Caro, Willem and Kichka, who will stimulate debate with their contentious caricatures. Indignant, worked-up, rebellious or inspired, they shock the world with a splash of ink across the newspaper columns. Two months after its harvest, Beaujolais Nouveau will yield its first juices: come and savour its youthful freshness, accompanied by a selection of cheeses, cold cuts and what’s more, crispy hot chips thanks to the little marvel of new cooking technology: ACTIFRY, from Tefal. Finally, we extend a warm welcome to Isabelle Larrouy our new deputy General Manager.
Best francophone wishes, Hervé Devoulon General Manager

Wednesday 26 November Lecture on Le Clézio by Dr Jacqueline Dutton, University of Melbourne
When Le Clézio was announced as the 2008 Nobel laureate in literature, there were many questioning glances and raised eyebrows. Practically unknown in the English speaking world, he has, however, been fêted in France since his first prize-winning novel was published in 1963. With over 40 novels, essays, collections of short stories and translations to his name, Le Clézio’s work has attracted both critical acclaim and popular attention. But who is Le Clézio and why was he chosen by the Swedish Academy for this prestigious prize? Jacqueline Dutton will present an overview of Le Clézio’s life and work to reveal what makes him the ideal choice for the Nobel laureate in literature. Drawing on her interviews with the author and studies of his work, she will explain how Le Clézio’s extensive travels and experiences of other cultures influence and shape his essentially humanist vision of the world. AF Gallery 6.30-8.30pm. All welcome!

Friday 14 November JOAKIM at the Civic Underground, Sydney
Originally trained in classical piano, Joakim started experimenting with a synthesiser after a school-friend left one behind in his bedroom. Happily, he was led astray, entering the world of electronic music. Consequently, the Parisian's style of music is difficult to classify - a mix of club, jazz, indie, and even experimentalism.
With new remix album due for release and his next album due in 2009, this is your opportunity to catch the multi-talented Joakim on his maiden Australian voyage!

Saturday 29 November to Tuesday 2 December Bertrand Tavernier visits Sydney!
The maverick filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier will be visiting Australia in November. At 14, he discovers the cinemathèque, the impact of Renoir, Fritz Lang and Buster Keaton's movies. In 1974, his first feature film “The clockmaker of Saint-Paul” wins the Silver Bear in Berlin and the Silver Hugo in Chicago. “Que la fête commence” & “The Judge and the Assassin” win several French Awards. With “Dead Watch” (1980) made in English in Scotland with Romy Schneider and Harvey Keitel, he wins international recognition. A camera does not give you a “safe conduct”, it demands responsibility. A filmmaker, in his view, can never be vigilant enough. The actor Philippe Noiret has acted in many of his films; he calls him his “autobiographical actor”. His filmography include masterpieces such as “Daddy Nostalgie”, “Capitaine Conan” and “Round Midnight”. Film screenings with Q&A, lectures following screenings at the Chauvel cinema, NFTRS & Sydney University...a fantastic opportunity to meet this incredible filmmaker. For more details on schedules, please contact us on 9292 5700.
