The Alliance Française de Sydney (AFS) is the leading French language school in Sydney, providing all levels of French from complete beginners to advanced, and offers a wide range of cultural events for its members, including the yearly Alliance Française French Film Festival.



As Business Development Manager for Alliance Française schools’ programs, you will be responsible for promoting, administering, executing and developing an annual program of activities for childcare centres and primary and secondary schools, with the aim of positioning the AFS as Sydney’s premier language and cultural institution, In addition, you will be responsible for promoting and developing business between the AFS and educational institutions in the Sydney region. 

The program of activities will comprise in-school French classes and programs in childcare centres and primary schools and include school competitions and workshops. The position also involves developing opportunities with Corporate Clients.

Business development:

As the Business Development Manager, you will be expected to:

  • Identify new leads and potential new markets in the educational sector in Sydney (childcare centres, primary schools, high schools) by researching organisations and individuals online or by attending conferences, meetings or educational events.
  • Manage, maintain and develop the contact database for French Language Coordinators in NSW schools
  • Identify decision makers and contact them via email or phone to establish contact and set up meetings
  • Pitch and promote Alliance Française courses and services to relevant institutions and organisations via meetings and networking opportunities
  • Plan and oversee new marketing initiatives
  • Maintain fruitful relationships with existing partners   

Management and coordination of school programs:

As the Business Development Manager, you will be expected to:

  • Manage, coordinate and deliver the AFS school programs: in-school French courses (in childcare centres and primary schools), high school workshops and school competitions
  • Coordinate the events related to school activities such as the annual School Award Ceremony in November and the French Film Festival School Screenings held in March (in collaboration with the French Film Festival team)
  • Work with the pedagogical team in order to design and implement projects related to school activities
  • Inform the Deputy Director and/or General Manager and other affected AFS employees of relevant information and client correspondence pertaining to school activities

 Communication to Clients and Stakeholders

As the Business Development Manager, you will be expected to:

  • Be responsible for the creation, maintenance and timely output of all school-related communications material (bulk mail-outs, brochures, website, registration forms, e-newsletters, calendar of activities)
  • Serve as a first point of contact for French school teachers in NSW, responding to enquiries (phone, email, in person) and promoting AFS activities 
  • Receive and welcome school groups attending AFS workshops
  • Set and manage French lessons terms in primary schools and French activities for children in childcare centres including communication with parents and schools through various channels: website, phone, email
  • Maintain and develop AFS’ links with French teachers’ associations and networks (e.g. NAFT, AIS, NSW Department of Education, private school head offices etc)
  • Communicate with relevant personnel across the Alliance Française network within Australia to facilitate mutually beneficial cooperation relevant to school activities
  • Periodically review and update all communications material used in workshops and competitions (e.g. resource booklets, PowerPoint presentations, etc.).


  • Process registration for school activities: invoices, and follow up on payments
  • Liaise with cafe staff to order French morning teas and assist coordination of lunch functions
  • Administer and coordinate processes relating to the organisation of school competitions
  • Design, print and distribute certificates for all students participating in school examinations and competitions
  • Provide statistics on school activities to the Deputy Director and General Manager


What we are looking for?

  • A sales-oriented person, or a person with strong customer-service skills
  • Excellent organisational skills, with an emphasis on priorities and goal-setting
  • In-depth knowledge of the Australian School system and current events
  • Fluency in English and French language (minimum of B2 level in French) - must be able to switch and work with both languages at all times
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher
  • Confidence in presenting/public speaking
