Each year, on 21 June, music takes over the streets of Paris. Parks, courtyards, metro stations and street corners are transformed into impromptu stages for live performances by bands, DJs, musicians and singers - amateur and professional alike!
The goal of this festival is neatly summarised by the slogan "Faites de la musique" ("Make music"), a homophone of Fête de la Musique ("music festival"). Citizens and residents are encouraged to make music, exposing others to and celebrating the joy of music. All performances are free to enjoy, with music of every kind and genre.
Originating in France in 1982, Fête de la Musique is now celebrated in more than 750 cities in 120 countries, including Australia.
