Chris Cody presents his new jazz octet, Astrolabe and his Suite for La Pérouse, inspired by the extraordinary three year voyage of French navigator La Pérouse to our shores.
International pianist and composer Chris Cody returns with his all-star group featuring some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians Thomas Avgenicos, trumpet, Matt Ottignon, clarinet, sax, flute, James Greening, trombone, Vanessa Tammetta, violin, Emily-Rose Sarkova, accordeon, Lloyd Swanton, bass, Fabian Hevia, percussion, to perform Astrolabe, Suite for La Pérouse. Inspired by the extraordinary three year voyage of French navigator La Pérouse who arrived here just six days after the First Fleet in 1788. After La Pérouse left these shores a few weeks later he was never seen again, his two ships being shipwrecked near the Solomon Islands.
The incredible voyage and disappearance at sea of this French navigator has been a big inspiration for Cody to write this work with differently imagined times, cultures and places.
The powerful and moving music draws upon jazz, classical and diverse world music influences inspired by the voyage. There is plenty of space for the musicians to open up and improvise over the different moods, textures and styles, ranging from calm meditation to exuberant joy.
It also features actor Simon Wilton reading extracts from the ship journal, and superb photos and projections by photographer and video artist Paul Faure-Brac.
