Farewelling a French Film Icon

Jean-Paul Belmondo: Learning Opportunities & Resources

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Jean Paul Belmondo, a beloved French actor and cinema legend.

Throughout his career, he personified both the New Wave through his many roles under directors such as Jean Luc Godard, Truffaut and Chabrol, as well as embodying comedic excellence for Rapeneau and especially Philippe de Broca in 'The Man from Rio' and 'The Magnificent'.

Just this year, the Alliance Française French Film Festival paid tribute to him by programming the remastered version of 'Breathless' which was embraced and celebrated by Australian audiences.

It's difficult to put into exact words the uniqueness of Jean Paul Belmondo, nicknamed Bebel, a legacy which will live on through the many films he starred in. He will be remembered for his banter, mischievous charm and effervescent presence. More than just a cinema icon, he was to many, an older brother, a companion, a friend and role model.

An enduring cool

Belmondo is renowned for an effortlessly cool look:

His style became an extension of his attitude: low key and understated, a look affirmed by the way he tosses his hats around in the film, in addition to the way he crumples the lower half of his blazer while digging his hands firmly into his pockets.
