French talk: Modern masters from the Hermitage

Date: 16 Feb 2019, 1:00pm - 2:00pm GMT+10 Sydney

In partnership with the Alliance Française de Sydney.

Assistant curator of European art, Anne Gérard-Austin, introduces the artworks featured in the Art Gallery of NSW summer exhibition Masters of modern art from the Hermitage for French speakers. This exhibition presents a magnificent selection of works from the towering figures of modern art. Drawn from the collections of the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, the exhibition captures the ebullience, idealism and confidence of artists in the early 20th century, many of them working in the avant-garde centre of Paris.

Exploring the origins of modern art, from the bold experiments of Cézanne to the radical innovation of artists like Matisse and Picasso, this talk will introduce you to the key artists in the exhibition—many of them major figures in French Art history—and the story behind the Hermitage collection. It includes an exhibition ticket so you can enjoy the artworks in your own time, before or after the talk.
